Book description(Preface)
In light of the fight against global warming, the widespread use of natural energy can not be delayed any longer.
In this backdrop,dye-sensitized solar cells have attracted considerable attention in all aspects as low-cost next-generation power-generating devices. This is the only type of solar cell which is capable of having colorful designs, transparency and flexibility.By taking advantage of these many features, even from the standpoint of photovoltaic devices, the time is not far off when the dye-sensitized solar cell becomes widespread and grows into an industry which can actively support future energy. In order to realize its practical application and to establish itself as an industry, further improvements towards higher conversion efficiency and better durability are necessary. Thus, constant development of new materials is essential. In particular, the refinement of dyes plays a crucial role in fulfilling this task.
This book is a compilation of86 kinds of dyes used in dye-sensitized solar cells, which have been reported so far, including their molecular structures and fundamental physical properties.
I received the full support of Dr.Fujisawa in data collection and also in the calculation and visualization of the HOMO and LUMO of the dyes.In addition to data gathering, Mr.Horiuchi, who stood at the frontier of this research field, traced the origin and trends of the various types of dyes.Beginning with a historical account of the earlier stages,he extensively lays out the development of the organic dyes until they reach their most recent transformation with significantly enhanced performance.
From hereon,it is my deepest wish to further expand this dye database.I fervently hope that this book can someday contribute to the research advancement of dye-sensitized solar cells.
Finally,I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has provided data for the publication of this book and Dr.Joanne T.Dy for her help in editing this manuscript.
